Photographs That Do Not Exist (FOTOFILMIC)

2023 · Ongoing

I create the backgrounds. I gather images from wherever I can find them — a photograph I have already taken, a fragment from Google Earth, a picture pulled from print — and I print them at scale, then bring them into the studio as stage sets. Objects meet the printed scene. The composition is then re-photographed as a single image.

The result is a photograph of a place that never existed. The gutter, the bridge, the desert, the wall — each is real, and each is now somewhere else. Rather than asking a tool to generate a scene that does not exist, I build it by hand from what I already have. The seams remain visible: tape holding the paper up, the shadow of a real object crossing the printed shadow of another, the curl of the paper at its edge. The series treats the photograph as a material — something you can print, prop, re-light, and re-photograph — rather than as a window into a fixed reality.
