White Balance - A Photographic Exploration of Race and Wealth

White Balance is an exhibition set in Atlanta that delves into the intricate relationship between photography, racial perceptions, and social class. It merges historical context with artistic experimentation to challenge our understanding of how images shape our world.

This exhibition's highlights:
Cotton, Banking, and Real Estate: The exhibition takes place in a space once owned by wealthy families who made their fortunes in cotton, banking, and real estate, connecting the venue itself to the themes explored.
Photographic Techniques as Metaphor:
The use of white balance and exposure in the exhibition serves as a metaphor for racial imbalance in society:
A blend of abstract images plays with concepts like white balance and exposure, drawing inspiration from Ansel Adams' Zone System and Fox Talbot's early halftone prints.
White Balance: In photography, white balance adjusts color temperature to make white objects appear genuinely white. This concept reflects how society often treats whiteness as a "neutral" or default standard against which it measures all races.
Exposure: Traditionally, photographic exposure techniques were optimized for light skin tones, often resulting in poor representation of darker skin. White experiences and perspectives influence system and institutional design, reflecting broader societal problems
• Historical Perspective: The show features photographs printed on vintage paper, highlighting cotton and silver's historical importance in photography and wealth accumulation.
• Bridging Past and Present: The exhibition demonstrates how photography influences our perceptions of race and wealth by combining century-old photographic paper and aged silver halide crystals with modern techniques.
White Balance encourages viewers to contemplate the power of images in shaping societal norms and challenges us to rethink the role of photography in either reinforcing or questioning racial and class distinctions.
