Print or Projection
Christina Price Washington's work in the exhibition "Print or Projection" displays her innovative approach to photography, blurring the lines between traditional print and digital projection. Her piece, featuring a photograph of a church on Georgia's Cumberland Island, demonstrates a unique deconstruction process that transforms the original image into a reduced copy machine representation*.
In this work, Price Washington challenges conventional notions of photographic representation by enlarging and deconstructing her original photograph. The result is an oversized copy machine image that becomes almost unrecognizable as either a traditional print or a projection. This technique effectively explores the boundaries between photography and copy media, inviting viewers to reconsider their perceptions of photographic imagery*.
By reducing the photograph to its most basic elements, Price Washington creates a visual experience that is both familiar and alien. The image hints at the origins of photography and that of a photocopy while evoking a sense of abstraction that transcends the original subject matter. This approach questions the nature of photographic representation and encourages viewers to engage with the image more contemplatively
Price Washington's contribution to "Print or Projection" exemplifies the exhibition's goal of examining photo-based artists' choices when selecting their medium. Her work is a testament to photography's evolving nature and potential to bridge the gap between traditional and contemporary artistic practices*.
